Drone attack
North Korea has accused the South of flying drones across the border and are now planning a response to this action. But South Korea has denied this accusation as they want peace within the peninsula.
The North Korean military warned the South that it will face consequences for this drone incursion. Reports claim that the North Korean military spotted the drone moving north at Ganghwa county.
The sister of Kim Jong-Un, Kim Yo-Jong wants the South Korean government to investigate these drone incursions. Even though Kim Yo Jong is grateful that Seoul has no intention of provocation, she warned of harrowing situations if this continues. But the South has no intentions of provoking the North.
According to the Associated Press, “‘We strongly denounce the hooligans’ serial outrageous encroachment upon our sovereignty and undisguised provocative acts against us,’ the North Korean statement said. ‘The ROK military warmongers will be surely forced to pay a dear price for their unpardonable hysteria.’”
The North Korean government had published photos of the downed drone. President Lee had ordered a thorough investigation regarding this drone incursion. The South suspects that it could be the North fabricating this to provoke rivalry with the South.
According to DW, “Pyongyang alleged that the drone was equipped with surveillance cameras and had reportedly filmed “major” North Korean facilities.”
The South Korea Defense Minister has denied that the drone belonged to the South Korean government as that is not the type of drone it carries. There were also no flight drills held by Marine Corp Command, Drone Operations Command or Ground Operations Command during the day the drones flew to North Korea.
In recent years, there have been drone incursions across the border.
In September 2025, there was a South Korean drone spotted near Kaesong, a North Korean city off the border with the South and it was forced to crash in the city close to Kaesong, Muksan-ri.
Before the drone was hit by electronic countermeasures while trying to return to South Korea, the drone flew over Phyongsan County in North Hwanghae Province and crashed in Jangphung County, Kaesong. In addition, there was five hours and 47 minutes of video footage of the northern areas.
In addition, in 2024 North Korea made accusations to the South for drone incursions that took place between October where drones scattered anti-regime leaflets.
In 2023, there was a drone incursion by North Korea, after 12 drones infiltrated the South. They flew into South Korea a day after Christmas and only seven drones made it to the northern section of the Gyeonggi Province before returning back to the North.
Then in 2022, North Korea had sent drones to the South and one of them had gotten close to Cheong Wa Dae (The Blue House).
In a statement by the Korean Central News Agency, North Korea`s state news agency, the North Korean military had called the South the “most hostile” enemy. Last year, Kim Yo Jong had expressed no desire to maintain relations with the South.
Apart from drone incursions, there have also been other border incursions at the 38th parallel. There have been Anti-North Korean activists that sent hot air balloons carrying Anti-Kim leaflets across the border to Pyongyang. In retaliation, the North sent trash across the border into the South.
As a gesture of peace, President Lee had stopped all Anti-North Korean activists from sending propaganda to North Korea and stopped the loud speakers from playing Kpop into North Korea.
The South Korean military uses drones like the KAI RQ-101 Songgolmae which is an unarmed UAV and looks very modern. The drone that is seen in the photos by the North Korean government is an old school looking drone.
